History Of The Garden City Primitive Baptist Church

The Garden City Primitive Baptist Church was constituted on February 1, 1961. With thirty nine original members, the church had services at the Groves High School Auditorium and the Garden City Community House until a suitable building could be obtained.

The property at 126 Smith avenue where the church is still located today was purchased on June 7, 1961. A wooden frame house on the property when it was purchased was converted into a sanctuary and a garage was converted into a Bible study building.

Through the years, God has blessed our church to grow and expand both spiritually and physically. In September, 1968, the garage Bible study building was replaced with a new education building complete with classrooms, music room, restrooms, an auditorium and a full kitchen.

In February, 1973, a house on Lynn Drive was donated to the church to be used as a Pastorium. It has served as a peaceful and comfortable retreat for the pastors and their families since that time, and still does so today.

On June 24, 1979, groundbreaking services were held for the building which is our current sanctuary. The construction of this beautiful building was completed by members of the congregation, and dedicated in September 1980.

Our church has grown from the original thirty nine members to a congregation in excess of one hundred members, and we are blessed to have been the church home of several ministers who have been liberated to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to our congregation and to other churches.

Our prayer is that we will ever be thankful for our rich heritage of the gospel with which we have been blessed in this place, and that we will continue to have a desire to share it with our community and our world.
